February 1: So Long as Men Can Breathe

To read a sonnet written to a love
Is to learn nothing of that paramour,
We know the poet might have got her glove,
But of her character we’ll know no more.

Who did she love? With whom had she rapport?
What did she want of life? What were her dreams?
Enduring fame from poet guarantor
Is not the splendid tribute that it seems.

“I deeply loved!” is poet’s chosen theme,
And that’s the sentiment that’s given life
And by a certain reader type esteemed-
Those less concerned with loving than with strife.

Thanks for the offered immortality;
I’d rather what I did give life to me.

Inspirations: Edmund Spenser, Sonnet 75
William Shakespeare, Sonnet 18
